Addis Ababa, May 16, 2025 (ENA) — According to Government Communication Service State Minister Tesfahun Gobezay, significant progress has been achieved this past Ethiopian fiscal year in boosting productivity, maintaining sustainable peace, and fostering development.
During today’s briefing for the media, the state minister highlighted that the government demonstrated its strong dedication to maintaining peace by facilitating the transition of combatants back into peaceful life.
In addition to its steadfast dedication to peace, the government is implementing robust law enforcement initiatives to safeguard the tranquility and safety of citizens against factions that oppose the calls for peace.
In its efforts to achieve Ethiopia’s inclusive growth, the government has made significant progress in sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, tourism, and digital technology.
Regarding the assurance of food sovereignty, the state minister highlighted that wheat cultivation via irrigation and the Bounty of Baskets program, amongst other efforts, have been implemented, showing remarkable progress.
Approximately 3.4 million hectares of land were cultivated with summer wheat, resulting in yields exceeding 66 million quintals.
He also added that 2.2 million hectares of land was cultivated with spring wheat, 235,000 hectares with cluster farming.
To enhance production and productivity and achieve food self-sufficiency, the government is working with special attention to improving the supply of fertilizers and the distribution of high-quality seeds.
As such, $1.3 billion was set aside for fertilizer purchases, and the government provided an 84-billion-Birr subsidy for the 2017/18 Ethiopian crop season.
He mentioned that the Made in Ethiopia initiative has boosted the output and global market position of the nation’s manufacturing sector. Additionally, Ethiopia has managed to replace $10.34 billion worth of imported goods over the last three years.
Furthermore, the government has prioritized the tourism sector economically and successfully refurbished existing attractions while also developing new ones. He added that this initiative led to an increase in visitor numbers.
Additionally, to enhance conference tourism, the government has effectively expanded existing travel hotspots and created new ones. As a result, the nation has successfully held 84 international conferences, drawing over 30,000 foreigners and 171,000 Ethiopians within just the last ten months.
Ethiopia is hosting 8 international conferences in May alone, the Ethiopian Technology Exhibition / ETEX 2025, the ID4 Africa Annual Conference, and the 20th International Labor Organization Continental Conference among them.
