Exciting Race Set to Boost Sports Tourism in Ethiopia’s Bokoji City – International Edition







On May 16, 2025, ENA reported from Addis Ababa — The Ethio Telecom Great Run is scheduled for May 25, 2025, in Bokoji, known worldwide as the hometown where many top Ethiopian sports stars were born.









This event signifies the third urban race in the “Discover Ethiopia Classics” series, which is part of a lineup of four scheduled competitions set to occur across various regional towns.







At today’s press briefing, Tourism State Minister Endegena Abebe stated that the government aims to establish Bokoji—a city renowned worldwide as the origin place of many prominent Ethiopian sportspersons—as a key destination for sports-related tourism growth.







“Our core aim is to leverage the power of athletics to drive economic development in areas like Bokoji,” he stated, highlighting plans to significantly boost investment in sports tourism, particularly within the hospitality sector.







He articulated the ambition for Bokoji to evolve into a renowned destination akin to Eldoret in Kenya, which is celebrated for both its athletic prowess and thriving tourism industry.







Culture and Sport Tourism State Minister, Mekuye Mohammed, noted Ethiopia’s considerable untapped potential in benefiting from the sport sector, stressing the need for dedicated efforts in this regard.







On his part, Bokoji Deputy Mayor Bezu Abebe affirmed the city’s readiness to welcome participants and guests.







He mentioned that a total of three thousand participants are anticipated to join the event, with athletes from ten nations participating in the race.
